A Real Energy Challenge Chat With Joel Harper

During our Real Energy Challenge this month, we’re bringing you healthy tips from friends of Peeled Snacks to inspire and encourage you to live your healthiest life!

Joel Harper is a celebrity personal trainer and fitness expert. His diverse clients range from Dr. Oz to Olympic athletes to famous actors. Here, he shares tips for finding real energy each day, including a favorite exercise move you can do at home and why he is constantly eating.

How do you encourage your clients to stay motivated?

I am always encouraging others to have a positive mind set, improve their deserve levels and laser focus on their goals. I take them through my 10 Core Concepts for Optimal Success, which I have found creates breakthroughs. Once you are in control of your thoughts the rest magically falls into place.

You talk about deserve levels in your new book, Mind Your Body. What is it? A deserve level is a rating of self-worth, self-respect and self-esteem for a given category in your life.  It’s the blessing or permission you give yourself based on what you believe you deserve in your life.

Are there any health mantras or philosophies you subscribe to? If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.

What is one of the biggest reasons people fail to meet their health and fitness goals?

Being a personal trainer to a wide range of unique clients, I have found the most common challenge across the board is having inconsistencies in part of one’s life. A healthy lifestyle is made up of two major components: diet and exercise. You need both components to maintain balance and progress.

To overcome inconsistency, you must approach your health in a way that fits you and only you.  Once you find what works best for you, the key is sticking to it and then maintaining your balance will follow.

Could you share a favorite exercise move with us?

Knee bounces are a great total body exercise that anyone can do anywhere.  Here’s how you do them:

Get Ready: This move is done from your hands and knees, with your hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips.

With soft elbows, lift your knees one inch off the ground, and bounce your knees one inch up and down for two minutes in the air.

While you perform this exercise, ask yourself how it feels on a 1-to-10 BURN Scale, with 1 being very easy and 10 being extremely intense effort. Aim for a 9 or a 10 throughout the move to get maximum results. Do 2 sets.

We love your new book, Mind Your Body. What inspired you to write it?

Fitness and living a healthy lifestyle are my passion, and I want people to achieve whatever goal(s) they have for themselves. The one area often overlooked in those falling short of achieving their fitness goals is the mind. Mind Your Body guides readers through a step-by-step process to be in control and achieve their goals.

What did you snack on today?

I am constantly eating. Throughout the day I snack on anything that is easy to grab and eat when I am on the go: carrots and hummus, hard-boiled eggs, yogurt, and lentil soup.
